Charter.net email with Windows Live Mail
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, Windows Live Mail | 4 Comments
I had my Charter.net on a Windows XP computer running Outlook Express. I got myself a Windows 7 machine yesterday. Since we don’t have O.E. on the new operating system, can I use my Charter email account on Windows Live Mail?
Packer Backer (PJ)
Though Windows Live Mail, the default email program on Windows 7, may look different from Outlook Express, its function is quite the same. You can download, store, send, and receive email through this new client just as you had done with Outlook Express. So your Charter.net email account will definitely work with Windows Live Mail if you were using with Outlook Express on the old Windows XP computer.

Charter POP incoming and outgoing email server
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, ISP | Leave a comment
I use the internet connection from Charter Communications. Can I download emails from the free email account to my computer and if so how? The support tells me to use the Charter POP incoming and outgoing server which sounds like an alien language to me.
Cherry Jakob
There are two ways to use your free Charter.net email account. You can either employ a web browser and load the account via the webmail interface (read Charter email login for details) or get your hands dirty with an email client which is just a fancy term for an email program. All such programs including, the popular Outlook Express and the new Windows Live Mail (on Windows 7), require you to supply the incoming and outgoing email server in addition to the email address, the username and the password. Confused? Don’t fret because it’s not that difficult – most things are intimidating when you attempt them for the first time.

Cannot login to email? Check this out
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, Internet Tips | 5 Comments
It can happen to the best of us. The other day my assistant, who is a “thoroughbred” programmer, comes up enquiring whether things are fine on Hotmail because he just cannot login to his email account. A quick check from my side showed that there was nothing wrong with Hotmail because I could login without problems. My assistant insisted that he was using the correct username (the full Hotmail email address) and password but they were being rejected.

Access Outlook Express email
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, Outlook Express | Leave a comment
My desktop’s motherboard fried over the weekend. I just bought a new laptop but would like to get my mail that was on the last computer. I now have Windows Live Mail and need to know if I can access Outlook Express email that were on my old computer.
Michele
There is some good news and some great news! Firstly, thank you lucky stars that it was the motherboard and not the hard disk that ‘fried’. Why? Because this means all you data is still intact. Yes, you won’t be able to access it directly on the new laptop, but rest assured, it’s there.

Change Windows Live Mail layout colors – issue
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Windows Live Mail | 13 Comments
I’ve been wanting to change the Windows Live Mail layout colors but it’s not as simple as you make it to be. So if I choose a deep maroon color, I still get a pastel shade and it’s not what I like. Could you give me some ideas?
Dean Russell
For those who didn’t know, you can change Windows Live Mail layout and colors; read the post on how to use Windows Live Mail for details. Thus, you can change the position of the email reading pane, the message list or folder pane to suit your needs. The Windows Live Mail interface color which is light blue by default can also be customized quickly.

Emails not downloading in Outlook Express
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, Outlook Express | 2 Comments
My emails are not downloading in Outlook Express. I can see the bar move forward but nothing is loaded in the inbox. The emails are there when I check via webmail but nothing seems to download. This is driving me crazy and any help will be greatly appreciated.
Gareth Morgan
There can be several reasons why Outlook Express is not downloading emails to your computer. To properly troubleshoot the problem let us understand how this email client works. Outlook Express first connects to the server using an email protocol (such as POP3). It scans the messages in the account to process any ‘message rules’ (more on these later). Emails are then downloaded one by one and are made to pass through additional message rules (if created), anti-spam filters (if installed), and / or firewall. Finally, the messages are stored on the hard disk at the specified location (if sufficient space is available).

Go to desktop or Show desktop icon on Windows 7 64-bit?
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Windows 7 | Leave a comment
Your instructions were great for Vista, but is there a way to create a ‘Go to desktop’ icon for Windows 7 64 bit.
Judy Faulkner
Judy, there is no need to create a ‘Show desktop‘ icon (or a ‘Go to desktop‘ icon as you call it) in Windows 7 64-bit because it’s already there! Unfortunately, it’s kind of inconspicuous on the Taskbar. But the good news is that it works better than what we have been used to in Windows XP or Vista.

Incredimail – set up Sky email address
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, ISP | Leave a comment
I want to use Incredimail and Sky email. Do I have to install Outlook Express? Is it possible to set up Sky email on Incredimail instead?
Terence Milligan
Incredimail and Outlook Express are email programs that download and store messages on your computer; you can also compose and send emails from these programs. Another big advantage of using email programs is having messages available even without an internet connection which means you can take your laptop on a flight, for instance, and still be able to check all old emails. On this page I shall detail how to set up the Sky email address on Incredimail program.
And no, you don’t need Outlook Express if you are happy with Incredimail – the two programs have the same functionality.

Can I keep my email address if I change to Gmail?
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Email, Gmail | 2 Comments
Can I keep my email address that I have had for years if I were to change to Gmail from my present service provider?
Brenda
Brenda, you write to me from a Road Runner address, so I assume they are your present email service providers. Now if you were to get a Gmail email address, nothing will happen to the present one and you can continue using it. Thus, you can keep the email address from Road Runner as long as you do not cancel their subscription.

Links not working on web site
Posted on February 16, 2010 under Internet Tips, Web Development | Leave a comment
I have only recently started learning to make a web site. I prepared everything on my computer and then uploaded the files on the server. But now the links are not working. Also the images are not visible. Everything seems fine on my computer so why am I facing this problem on the server?
Jerome Taylor
Though I assume the site was developed on a computer running Windows, most of the troubleshooting tips for the problem of links not working would also be applicable for users on other operating systems. Based on my teaching experience, there can be many reasons why things seem fine on your local system but the hyperlinks do not work on the server. Keep your mind open to possibilities of small errors and do go through these tips thoroughly – do not take things for granted.
