Email notification sound – play my own message
Posted on January 16, 2010 under Windows Live Mail | 2 Comments
I set up my email notification sound using a recorded message. It works but only when I open the email program. Is it possible to set it up so it warns me of a delivered email even though Window Live Mail is not open?
Clive Tear
Craig, great going. Not many people know how to use new email notification sounds alert properly, let alone creating their own email alert files… though it’s quite simple. Anyway, coming to your query, since the email notification sound has been set up in Windows Live Mail you need to have the software running to play the file. But, and here’s a little tip, you can always minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray – let the program run in the background.

Transfer emails from Windows Vista to Windows 7
Posted on January 16, 2010 under Email, Windows 7, Windows Vista | 3 Comments
I have recently purchased a laptop that has Windows 7. Can you tell me how to use email on this computer and how to transfer emails from my old Windows Vista machine to the Windows 7 laptop.
Anne Venters
Congratulations on the new purchase; I too bought a Windows 7 Sony VAIO laptop a month back. Unfortunately because of an important change made by Microsoft, users find themselves quite at sea trying to figure out how to use email on the new operating system. It all started with Windows Vista in which the popular and much-loved Outlook Express was missing and replaced by Windows Mail. Similarly, on Windows 7, Windows Mail was phased out and a new email program was introduced. It was (confusingly) called Windows Live Mail. In this post, I will first brief you on the Windows 7 email program and then tell you how to move and transfer email from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

Get Windows Live Mail
Posted on January 16, 2010 under Windows Live Mail | Leave a comment
Windows Live Mail (WLM) is a free email client from Microsoft. It can be installed and set up on XP, Vista and Windows 7 computers. In fact, it comes as the default email program on the Windows 7 operating system. In this post I shall provide instructions on how to get Windows Live Mail for your computer. Please note, Microsoft urges users of Outlook Express and Windows Mail Vista to move to the newer Windows Live Mail because these older programs are no longer been developed and supported.

Email program on Windows 7
Posted on January 16, 2010 under Email, Windows 7 | 8 Comments
I am thoroughly confused with the computer I bought and am thinking of returning it. I can’t seem to find the email program on Windows 7. Please let me know how to use email on this operating system. [Expletives against Microsoft removed]
Johann Berry
Johann, no need to fret. Microsoft hasn’t left you or others users in the lurch. Yes, there is no Outlook Express or Windows Mail on the new operating system; the default email program on Windows 7 is Windows Live Mail. And like other email clients, Windows Live Mail lets you receive, store and send messages from your computer once it has been set up.

Can I change the incoming and outgoing email server?
Posted on January 16, 2010 under Email, ISP | 2 Comments
I will be shifting to Manhattan in a week. I was told by my ISP that in order to continue using their services and retain my email address, I would have to change the incoming and outgoing email server settings on my computer? Can I really do this? Will it not affect the way I send and receive email?
Christina
Internet Service Providers (ISP) can be local or national. The ones who have a presence across different states may ask you to change the incoming and outgoing email server if you want to continue using their services and your email account. For instance, Road Runner’s incoming and outgoing email server addresses are different for their different locations.

How much does email cost?
Posted on January 16, 2010 under Email | Leave a comment
I used to run a successful auto parts manufacturing company in Ohio but have now happily retired. I never had anything to do with computers but on my wife’s insistence, we got one with internet for the New Year. I wanted to know how much does email cost. Is there a price for setting up email on my computer and what would it be? I’ve heard we can send pictures with email – will that cost more?
D. McGuire
Firstly, since you have a ‘computer with internet’, you probably have an email account too! Get in touch with the company that provides the internet connection and ask them for details. However, please note that this email will be closed and deleted once you cancel the internet connection or shift to another ISP (Internet Service Provider). I suggest you get an email address from a free web service. Yes! An email will cost zilch if you use one of the excellent services I list below. And if you are wondering how many email addresses you can have, read that page for details – there is no “one email per person” rule!

Enter Hotmail password each time
Posted on January 15, 2010 under Hotmail | Leave a comment
I originally checked the box “Remember my password”. I now want to sign in with my password each time for security/privacy reasons. I cannot find out how to un-check this feature. Can you advise me how to do this? Thank you,
John Moss
The Hotmail “Remember my password” feature offers the convenience of not having to enter your password each time you want to check email on this service. However, I have always believed this to be a double-edged sword. Though it saves time and the trouble of recalling and typing in the password, you might just forget the login information in a few days!

When can I start using email?
Posted on January 15, 2010 under Email | Leave a comment
Thanks to the instructions on how to get an email address, I’ve been able to create two email accounts – one at Hotmail and the other at Yahoo. How soon can i start using my email address after setting it up? Thanks again and Merry Christmas
Rochelle
I sometimes hate myself for not stating the obvious. Well, Rochelle, your email address is ready the moment to set it up. So if you’ve filled and submitted the online registration form successfully, the email inbox will be shown and you can start using email immediately.

Get avatar in minutes – cartoon or photo avatar
Posted on January 7, 2010 under Images & photos | 2 Comments
Though the doppelme.com service, detailed in how to make an avatar, gives you a cute cartoon picture, the options are kind of limited. Lots of visitors asked how they can get a photo avatar by which they mean converting their photograph to an avatar image. This is quite an easy thing and there are two ways to go about it. The first involves using an image editor with which you change a photo into an avatar… but this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The simpler approach is to use one of the free services available online.

Put transparent watermark on photographs and pictures
Posted on January 7, 2010 under Images & photos | Leave a comment
I am an avid lepidopterist and want to put pictures of my collection on a blog for sale. I read that one of the best ways to protect ownership of digital photographs is through the use of watermarks. Initially I would be using my digital camera but would like to employ a professional photographer later on. Could you tell me the easiest way to put a transparent watermark on these photographs?
Marc Cooley
A watermark when added to an image changes it… so the first thing to remember is to make a copy of the original photographs and work on them. Now to make a watermark, all we need is an image editor and there are tons of these available. For example, the free online Pixlr.com editor is more than sufficient for our needs and can quickly be employed to put a transparent watermark on photographs and pictures. By the way, I hope by “transparent watermark” you mean one which is semi-opaque and lets the underlying image show through… because that’s what I have assumed!
