Extract color from image: get color codes

Posted on November 7, 2009 under Images & photos, Web Design  |  1 Comment

If you are a web site designer, I’m sure you will appreciate this neat tool. Typically, clients provide the designer with images and photographs around which the web site layout needs to be created. The first step is to find the colors that will complement these images and photographs. I know you can use the dropper tool of your favorite image editing program but only this gives the color of the selected pixel. What web designers actually need are the predominant colors in the image.

Choose email address

Thanks for the information on how to create an email address. I had an account with my ISP and have now plan to go with Gmail. Can I choose any email address I want?
Andre (South Africa)

It would be unwise to give a direct ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to this question. This will be made clear once you understand the basics of email.

Check typing speed

If you have a couple of minutes to spare and want to check your typing speed, head off to the Speedtest at 10-Fast-fingers.com. The service is free and shows you one sentence at a time which needs to be typed in the blank field. The stopwatch on the left will start the countdown once you enter the first letter.

Maybe that’s the way it’s meant to be, but I didn’t like the nonsensical sentences the service displays. I would have rather liked real world meaningful sentences. Anyway, who am I to judge when I got a not-so-high-score of 58 words per minute? Though I never “properly” learnt how to type, checking my typing speed at this speed test was quite an eyeopener – I didn’t realize I was not good (read “bad”) at this.

Is Outlook Express exclusive to Internet Explorer? Can it by used with Firefox?
William

Outlook Express and Mozilla Firefox are different programs – the former is an email client while the latter is a web browser. It’s not surprising that William is confused as Outlook Express was bundled with Internet Explorer browser (till version 6).

Host many web sites

Thanks for all the information on web hosting. Where can I buy a website sever to host many web sites.
Richard Murphy

It’s very easy and cheap to host many web sites nowadays; and, no, you don’t need a separate hosting plans for each. As long as the web sites don’t get millions of heavy users each day or run server intensive processes, putting all of them on a single reseller web hosting package will save you a lot of money. However, choosing a reliable web hosting company may confound the newly initiated. There are simply too many companies fighting it out in the marketplace. Anyway, in this post I shall share some of my experiences and point you in the right direction.

Use Gmail with Outlook Express

Posted on November 6, 2009 under Gmail, Outlook Express  |  Leave a comment

I want to use Gmail with Outlook Express – how do I do that? Can I send Gmail emails from Outlook Express or do I need to log in at my Gmail account every time? Can I download all Gmail emails to my computer? Is it possible to keep one copy of the email on Gmail and one on my computer?
Wilfred Jose

Lots of questions… and the answers follow.
To use Gmail with Outlook Express, you first need to set up the account in the email program. This is quite a simple process. After configuring the Gmail account in Outlook Express you need to connect to the internet and download messages from the online Gmail web server. The email messages would then be stored on your computer and accessible by opening the Outlook Express program.

Yahoo account compromised: ID incorrect

Posted on November 6, 2009 under Yahoo  |  4 Comments

I am told my Yahoo ID is incorrect. I’ve had the same address for over 8 years. Recently I was e-mailed that my Yahoo account may have been compromised and I needed to change my password, which I did. My machine was working fine last night and today… I can’t get into Yahoo at all. Every thing I type in is not letting me access it. Help!
Lynne Bryant

It seems Lynne has been a victim of a typical phishing attack. She received an email with a distressing subject “Your Yahoo account has been compromised” and acted hastily on it. In her anguish, she must have clicked a link in the email and would have then been taken to a fraudulent web site where she entered the Yahoo ID and password.
