Outlook window opens – email is Yahoo
Posted on November 10, 2009 under Email, Outlook Express, Yahoo | Leave a comment
My email is Yahoo. When I want to email something from the net an Outlook window opens. If I type my message in this window and hit send, I get an error message and the email goes nowhere. What do I need to do? Thanks
Jimmy
For the sake of other readers, let me take a step back and describe this issue in greater detail.
Jimmy comes across an email address on a web page. When he clicks on it, an Outlook window with the email address in the “To:” field opens. Jimmy quickly realizes that this might be a way to send email. He puts in the email subject and composes the message. Everything seems fine but when he hits the send, an error message is displayed. Probably, the Outlook window remains open which further confirms that the email hasn’t left his computer.
OK Jimmy here is what you have to do.

How much space do I get with my domain name?
Posted on November 10, 2009 under Hosting | Leave a comment
I am thinking of getting a web site and have registered a domain name. Apologies for so many questions but I am new to this. How much of space do I get with the domain name? How much do I need for a web site and about 30 email addresses? I want to run an online shop to sell cuff-links and tie pins and plan to have several photos for each product. Thank you in advance.
Jody Barn
Jody, congratulations on acquiring a domain name which is the first step towards a professional web presence. You now need to set up the 30 email accounts and create a placeholder home page for your web site. And for this you need to host the domain name on a web server. So let us first ascertain whether any web hosting package is available with your domain name.

I’d like to set up my Outlook Express email account but I’m having problems. I’ve gone over the instructions provided by you but I don’t know what are the Outlook Express incoming and outgoing email servers. Could you please help me use the Comcast email on my computer?
Antoinette Betty
Outlook Express, as most of you would know, is an email client that lets you download and store email messages on your computer. The first step in using Outlook Express is to setup a new email account. And for that you need to know the following:

I have a computer running Windows XP. Can I use Outlook Express as well as Windows Live Mail? Or will having the two programs together create problems?
Brian Dunn
For those who don’t know, both Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail are free email clients from Microsoft. In fact, there is one more, Windows Mail which comes pre-installed with the Vista operating system.

Want email address – get a temporary one for free!

All good things have some kind of negative aspect. Take the case of email. It’s a revolutionary technology that’s changed the way people communicate. There are many advantages of email over snail-mail – it’s lightning fast, costs little or no money and is really convenient as it can be sent from a variety of digital devices. However, the scourge of spam (unsolicited messages) has been its bane. Every email account holder has faced spam in some form or the other.

MySQL on Windows 7 64 bit – Installation with Apache and PHP
Posted on November 8, 2009 under Other, Web Development | 16 Comments
A week back I got a spanking new Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit). Its been a sort of tradition with me that the first programs I install on a new computer are Apache web server with PHP and MySQL. I do this even before I setup the email client.
I have been installing and using Apache+PHP+MySQL on Windows operating system since the late 90s, so I suppose I have been around. But there was something new to learn this time. This was a 64 bit computer running Windows 7. Nothing unusual I thought… but was I wrong!?

Convert photo to polaroid

A week back I needed to convert a photo to a polaroid (digitally) to be used in a web site design. This was quickly done using our trusted Photoshop program. The client liked the “polaroid effect” so much that they asked us to do it for tens of other photographs. Now, we are quite adept at Photoshop so this was not a problem because the native image was in its own layer. We simply needed to substitute one photo with another.

Change domain name on server

Where do I change the domain name on my web server? I’m letting go of my expired domain, and need to change the http association to a new one. Can anyone help?
Janet Powers
Can you change the domain name on web hosting server?
A web hosting plan is typically ‘tied’ to a domain name. On plans that allow you to host multiple web sites, there would at least be one primary domain name. Generally there is no direct option in the control panel through which you can change the associated domain name. So what should you do?

Regular indexing of the content plays an important role in optimizing your web site for search engines. The process of indexing or data collection is done by automated programs called bots. These programs constantly crawl the web, pick up new and updated information and send it to another program which puts everything in a database.
