Gmail storage space – how much is it today?

Posted on September 30, 2009 under Gmail  |  2 Comments

Google’s Gmail was launched with great fanfare – all free email accounts had 1GB storage space which was hundreds of times more than what was offered by other popular email services esp. Hotmail and Yahoo. Though the fight for providing the biggest storage has kind of ended with Yahoo Mail doling out unlimited storage space, Google has taken a steadier approach with the Infinity+ plan. I’m not sure if we will ever get unlimited storage on Gmail but it has been increasing over the years.

Gmail storage space – have you checked it today?

Now here is something strange. As per the gradual increase promised by Google, the storage space on the email account would have been close to 7.4 GB today. But it seems the Gmail home page is showing a much lower value – only 2.7GB!

I am facing some terrible problems. I cannot seem to create an email address. I’m trying to access the Hotmail service from my home computer but I can’t get the sign in page. What am I doing wrong?
Rose

Not everyone is computer savvy. In fact, many internet users have only recently been initiated and continually find themselves at sea. In this post I shall provide some troubleshooting tips when you are facing problems and cannot create an email address. Please understand that though I’ve tried to be thorough, there is no way I can provide a solution to each and every problem. I encourage you to write to me with complete details of the issues you are facing.

Problems in email: cannot create an email account

Creating an email address is probably one of the first steps and there are tens of free email services vying for your attention. Though the process of getting an email address from one of these webmail services is generally quite easy, new users might get stuck due to different settings and configurations of their computers or those on the ISP. So if you cannot create an email address, here are troubleshooting tips to some common problems:

Use two (2) Hotmail email accounts

Posted on September 29, 2009 under Email, Hotmail  |  2 Comments

My wife and I both have Hotmail email accounts. I am unable to access mine. When I try to sign in, Hotmail goes directly to her inbox, i.e., the sign in page never comes up on the monitor, HELP! How can we use two Hotmail emails accounts on one computer?
Mel Gould

The solution to Mel’s problem is quite simple, but before we delve into that let me explain how this issue came about. By the way, there is nothing stopping you from using two or more email accounts (whether from Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail) from the same computer and even the same web browser.

Email address expired?

I used to have an email address but it seems it has expired. Can this happen? is there an expiration date of an email?
Noemi Blaza

Let me start with a cliche – ‘Nothing lasts forever’ – sorry, couldn’t help it. But it is a fact – everything will die or “expire” one day. And the same holds true for an email address. Technically, it would be more correct to refer to an email account as “closed” or “deleted” instead of saying the email address has expired.

Can you please let me have details on Gmail and why it is different from other mailing accounts?
AnnaRox

To understand how Gmail is different from other email services, we need to go back in time to the day when it was officially announced. Gmail not only changed the free email landscape but also the internet as a whole. And there are many things that make it special – the initial launch, the bundled free features, continual improvements and additions via Gmail Labs.

Is Google.com a search engine?

Posted on September 24, 2009 under Google  |  Leave a comment

I’m not what you would call a “web developer” but I do spend fair amount of time on the internet. Though the question might be basic, would you consider Google.com a search engine?
Amanda Bogs

This seemingly simple question (thanks, Amanda) can help answer some very basic doubts of beginners. Is Google.com a search engine or is it a web site?

What is Google.com?

Technically speaking, Google.com is simply a domain name that points to a web site. When you load this web address in a web browser, what you see is the famous Google page with a search query form which we have all used.

If you are obsessed with Google (most web developers and bloggers are) and have a little spare time, here is a great page I came across in the corporate section of the Google’s web site. It showcases the company history in an interactive timeline. I liked the way the page has been laid out and the important events and happenings listed each year. Great stuff. More »

Outlook Express slow because of Message Rules

Posted on September 20, 2009 under Outlook Express  |  Leave a comment

I had an interesting comment from a visitor today. He has 12 email accounts configured in the Outlook Express program. Looking for ways to organize and automatically sort the email messages, he stumbled on the Message Rules article. Overzealous with the new information, he creates tens of message rules in Outlook Express. The outcome was not something he expected – Outlook Express became very slow! To quote him:

I though the Message rules would help organize the email messages in Outlook Express. They are not so great as you tout them to be. Firstly, nothing happens to the messages that are already stored on my computer and, secondly, it just slows down Outlook Express, especially the process of downloading email.
