Get IMAP access on your email
Posted on April 8, 2011 under Email, Gmail, Internet Tips | 3 Comments
There are two popular email protocols for downloading messages to the local computer – POP3 and IMAP. The former is available on most, if not all, email accounts either for free or by paying a nominal sum. For instance, you can get POP3 enabled on a Yahoo! email account for an yearly charge of $20.
Even though IMAP is a newer and probably a better protocol than POP3, unfortunately most email accounts do not support it. If it’s missing on your service too, there is no need to despair as in this post, I shall explain how you can get IMAP access on any email account and that too for free!

Remove the Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple computers pop up box
Posted on April 8, 2011 under Yahoo | Leave a comment
I have been with SBCGlobal and decided to get a Yahoo.com address. There is a box that points to the Yahoo symbol at the top left portion of the page THAT WILL SIMPLY NOT GO AWAY. It says, “Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple computers”. I have rebooted and every time I log in to my new email this box appears and I am unable to close it. Please HELP!
Maureen
Congratulations on creating a Yahoo ID which I consider the best email service in the world. It’s sad to know that you are facing this problem but take heart, the Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple computers pop up box can be removed for good in less than a minute.

Disadvantages of shortening URLs
Posted on April 5, 2011 under Blogging, Internet Tips | 1 Comment
A couple of days back, I was involved in a heated discussion with a friend. He was going on about the merits of URL shortening services. Being a man of habit, I had to take the opposing view. The result was actually quite enlightening and by the end of the highly animated argument I had managed to convince him (Yay! I won). I came up with the following disadvantages of shortening a URL… maybe you can add a few to this list.

When should I change my password?
Posted on March 11, 2011 under Internet Tips | Leave a comment
I use several web services like Gmail, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, MySpace etc. All these accounts have different passwords which are sufficiently strong. But sometimes I still worry because of the sensitive and important information stored in these accounts. Should I change the passwords often? Will this help increase security and thwart the attacks from hackers? Are there any advantages in changing passwords frequently?
Norma D. Coon
In brief, the need to frequently change your password depends on the type of account. As you probably know, not all services are the same. For instance, your online banking account should be guarded with dear life while the one at a forum is not that important. Even so, is there any advantage in changing the password often?

Common passwords lists

Imperva, an internet security firm, has provided a list of the most common passwords people use. These are really bad passwords as they provide little or no security. On similar lines, Twitter, the popular micro-blogging web site, maintains a black list containing words that cannot be used as passwords; a commendable step towards protecting users from their own stupidity.

Good security question for your account
Posted on March 11, 2011 under Internet Tips | 4 Comments
On many popular web services one is required to choose or create a security question during the sign up process. This account safety feature helps in recovering or resetting the password in case you forget the login information. Sadly, some users, especially the newly initiated, don’t understand the full importance of the security question and take it kind of lightly only to have their accounts snatched away by hackers.
