Make space on hard disk – how to clean up my computer

Posted on November 20, 2009 under Other  |  Leave a comment

I’ve noticed the available free space on my computer’s hard disk keeps changing each day – even when I haven’t installed a new program or downloaded big files. Why does this happen and how can I make more space on the hard disk?
Becky H.

I had a similar issue on my Vista laptop. The free space on the hard disk used to change by a couple of hundred MBs (sometimes much more) and I know I hadn’t installed new software or saved huge files. I couldn’t pin-point the exact reason why this used to happen but am reasonably sure that it was because of temporary internet files (if I have visited many web sites), offline web pages, or system dump files. Any way, the easiest way to make space on the hard disk is to use a system tool called Disk Cleanup that comes with XP, Vista and Windows 7. And once you’ve run this program and want more space, I suggest reading the article on how to free up disk space on your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool is located under from “All Programs” -> “Accessories” -> “System Tools“.

Images not displaying on web site

Posted on November 20, 2009 under Web Design, Web Development  |  Leave a comment

Your website is indeed very informative… I would be very thankful if you could kindly clear my confusion. My website looks fine when I tested on my computer but when it is loaded at the server and viewed later using IE, some images are not displayed on the web site. I tried with both the GIF ang JPG format. Before loading the pages everything is fine… is this a problem with my pages/images or the server?
Lawma

This is a very common problem faced by budding web developers. Things work fine on the local computer but when uploaded to a server, the images just do not display on the web site. To be truthful, I too had a brush with this issue… a decade ago. Anyway, here are some troubleshooting tips to help you get the images displayed on the web site when its loaded from the server.

Wordpress spam blocked!

This is a follow up to what I wrote in an earlier post on how to stop spam on your WordPress blog by using reCAPTCHA security text. So was this plugin able to block WordPress spam?? Did the wavy security text prevent the automated programs that were filling my inbox with unsolicited messages concerning “manhood” pills? Here are the results after a couple of weeks.

How long does an email account last?

Posted on November 17, 2009 under Email  |  Leave a comment

I read your tips on how to create an email account. Thank you so much – I am now a proud owner of a Yahoo email address. The internet thingy is still quite new to me so would be grateful if you can help me out with a small doubt I had. I wanted to know how long can I own this email address? A related question is, how long does an email account last?
Frederick Lawrence

It’s heartening to know I was able to help you get an email address. You made a wise choice in picking the Yahoo! service for your first email account – not that Hotmail or Gmail are bad. But as I have pointed out in another article, Yahoo email is probably the best email ever! Anyway, now that you have an email address, it’s only natural you have these questions.

Posted on November 16, 2009 under Hotmail  |  Leave a comment

When I am composing an email my screen updates and puts the email in the Drafts folder … I send my email and it is removed from Drafts folder. I have no need for my mail to go into drafts would like to find out how to correct it.
Sandra McNulty

On the 31st of August 2009, Microsoft implemented some changed and upgrades to their free email service – Hotmail, or more correctly, Windows Live Hotmail. One of these included the Auto save Drafts folder; this feature will automatically saves the email you are composing in the Drafts folder every three minutes. The same functionality can be found in Hotmail competitors – Gmail and Yahoo! Mail. However, subscribers cannot turn this feature off – they cannot even change the time interval.

Remove attachment and save email

How to copy (save as) an email message without the attachment? Or, how to remove attachments?
Josh

The solution to Josh’s problem is quite simple actually – at least, that’s the way I do it. FYI, the instructions below are for the Windows Live Mail email client but they will work with Windows Mail Vista, Outlook Express or (probably) any other email client too. So how can you remove the attachment and save the email?

Install Windows Mail on Windows 7

Posted on November 16, 2009 under Windows 7, Windows Mail  |  Leave a comment

I had a Windows Vista computer and used Windows Mail for checking emails. I bought a new computer for my home-office but I don’t find the email program on it. Can I install Windows Mail on Windows 7? If so from where can I download it?
James Hall

Windows Mail which replaced the popular Outlook Express was the default email program on Windows Vista operating system. However, Microsoft stopped development and support and launched a newer email client – Windows Live Mail; note the similar names. Windows Mail was quite like Outlook Express – email organization and interface were comparable. However, Windows Live Mail is markedly different from its predecessors.

No email program for new computer

Posted on November 16, 2009 under Email, Windows 7  |  Leave a comment

Just bought a desktop yesterday and it has no email program. I am still on a dial-up internet connection and dreading the download time. Would be grateful if you can advise me.
Ellie

I am doubtful of Ellie’s complaint. All Windows based computers come with a default email client, whether it was Outlook Express on Windows XP (and before), Windows Mail on Vista or Windows Live Mail on Windows 7. There is bound to be an in-built email program on Ellie’s new computer too; however, she would find herself quite at sea because of the changes to nomenclature by Microsoft – and that is why I am there to help.

Email on Windows 7 laptop

Posted on November 16, 2009 under Email, Outlook Express, Windows 7, Windows Live Mail  |  Leave a comment

I am sure you already know, Outlook Express is not on Windows 7. In fact, it was ‘missing’ from Vista too – replaced with Windows Mail.
So can you use email on the Windows 7 laptop?
Yes, there is an alternative to the popular Outlook Express – Microsoft hasn’t left its users in the lurch. This new program is called Windows Live Mail; it’s actually not new since I have been using it for over an a year now (on Windows Vista). By the way, I bought a new VAIO laptop with Windows 7 and it came with this email client. If yours didn’t, download Windows Live Mail for free from the Microsoft web site.
